Writers – Getting to the Core

Friday – July 29th 3pm – Church of Cinema

This salon discussion explores the human urge toward story, and how to go about unlocking the stories that need to be told. The panelists will offer various perspectives on the creative process from the very inception of our story ideas through their cultivation and development into a form that can be shared with others. As we peel away the layers to reveal the very essence of our urges, a picture emerges of the centrality of narrative in our lives: face-to-face, online, and everywhere in between.

What is going on in our brain during this creative process? Dr. Bilder will explore the biology of creativity. Where and how does a thought originate? What happens in the brain during writer’s block? How to ‘unlock’ the narrative – describing the brain systems that help us connect cognitive processes to visceral states, engage empathic “mirror” states, and balance cognitive stability with cognitive flexibility.

Moderator: LG Taylor
Panelists: Karin Gutman, Laura Milner, PhD, and Joan Scheckel
Neuroscientist: Dr. Robert M. Bilder

LIGHTING THE FUTURE - Emerging Cinematographers

Friday – July 29th 12pm – Ribbit Tree Amphitheater

The International Cinematographers Guild is an industry leader in developing members’ skills through training sessions and its Emerging Cinematographer Awards. Films from the 2010 ECA honorees are being screened at the Topanga Film Festival and one of those honorees, John Snedden is a panelist. He and fellow panelists will discuss the importance of training in today’s rapidly evolving technological changes. They will discuss the values of film and digital photography. Today’s smaller, smarter cameras make it easier and less expensive for first-time filmmakers to work.  But without acquiring the knowledge of lighting and lenses their films will be worth nothing.

Moderator: David Geffner, who is the editor of award-winning ICG Magazine

Panelists: James Chressanthis, Marco Fargnoli, John Snedden, Rodney Taylor, Todd A. Dos Reis

NeuroCinema – Perspectives on the Science Behind Cinema
A cognitive and artistic analysis of filmmaking.

Saturday – July 30th 4:30pm – Church of Cinema

How are the director’s stylistic intentions recognized by film viewers? What is the neurological basis for cinematic styles?  We will explore the director’s creative decisions, especially how artistic devices affect  the way viewers segment and categorize events in film.  In unraveling the cognitive neuroscience behind this process, we examine an important facet of neurocinematics:   film neuroaesthetics or the brain’s response to movies as works of art.
“Neurocinematics” a phrase coined by Dr. Uri Hasson, Princeton University.

Transformat Media Panel

Friday- July 29th – 1pm – Church of Cinema

Transmedia storytelling uses multiple media platforms to tell a single, coherent story or narrative that unfolds across time. Each media piece-whether it’s a website, novel, video games, mobile apps, or a film-provides different points of access and can engage different demographics. Each media components add to the story while functioning as a standalone experience.  Each component invites some level of participation.  The story can be experienced and appreciated at any stage, but the cumulative effect of all the pieces makes a larger, richer and more engaging message experience.

Moderator: Urs Baur
Panelists: Brent Bushnell, Tre Azam, Michael Epstein
