A Tribute to Charlie Chaplin Presented by Miranda Robin SATURDAY- JULY 30TH 3:00 PM Film, captured through sight and sound, is an everlasting image that stays with us forever. Director, writer, actor and composer Charlie Chaplin gave the world of cinema a legacy of talent and silver screen genius. His body of work inspired citizens of cities and offended parts of others. The strength and conviction to say what you mean and act upon it was portrayed through Chaplin’s films and character. His ability to write, direct, compose and star in his films showed strength and perseverance, while portraying his inner wishes and dreams to appear available to all who viewed his magic. The Topanga Film Festival honors Chaplin as a film pioneer whose creativity and soul motivate filmmakers, actors and films being shot today. This is an appreciation of where film has been and where it is going, recognizing the brilliant minds that encourage us all. Chaplin brought to the film community a blend of calmness and chaos that got projects accomplished. The drive and desire to succeed were part of the foundation of Chaplin’s films, portrayed through character work and single image camera shots. His films were rooted in emotion and real family dynamics. The stories of love were blossoming and tragic and the spirit of life was shown in every slapstick and humorous facial expression. A nuance in a glance, or stare, can make or break the moment that is captured on film. Those moments are the ones we write in our mental film Rolodex. Chaplin’s films are all those moments, to be watched and admired time and again. The Charlie Chaplin footage shown during the film festival is a reminder of how powerful film is and how one person and one voice can make a difference. Topanga Film Festival will be showing a selection of Chaplin’s films through a montage reel and a screening of Chaplin’s Masterpiece One A.M. in its entirety. Let Chaplin make you smile.
“To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!” -Charlie Chaplin
